Invert Emulsion Mud and Drilling Fluid Leaks

Invert emulsion (oil-based or synthetic) drilling muds contain hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and toxic chemical additives necessary for cooling bits and maintaining borehole stability. Failure of mud storage pits, line ruptures, or improper retention in reserve pits can allow these toxic fluids to seep into soil and leach into shallow freshwater aquifers, causing extensive subsurface contamination and remediation costs.
