Air duct cleaning contractors face significant environmental and pollution exposures. The mechanical agitation, brushing, whipping, and vacuuming of complex ventilation infrastructure can inadvertently mobilize and distribute accumulated biological contaminants, such as fungi, mold, bacteria, and viruses, directly into the occupied building envelope, compromising indoor air quality. Containment and Negative Pressure Failure

Improper setup or mechanical failure of isolation barriers and HEPA-filtered vacuum extraction units can disrupt system containment. If negative pressure is lost during aggressive agitation, millions of concentrated mold spores (Stachybotrys chartarum, Aspergillus) can escape into the occupied building envelope, causing immediate indoor air quality degradation and necessitating extensive professional environmental remediation.

Microbial Bloom via Moisture Inversion

The introduction of liquid coil cleaners, high-pressure washes, or water-based sanitizers requires complete system drying and evaporation within 24 to 48 hours. If the air duct cleaning contractor fails to ensure the HVAC infrastructure is completely dry, the residual moisture can interact with organic dust on fiberglass insulation liners, sparking a hidden mold bloom throughout the building.

Aerosolizing Rodent and Bird Pathogens

During the mechanical brushing phase, a flexible exhaust hose on a negative-air HEPA vacuum ruptured, blowing millions of concentrated mold spores into an adjacent pediatric clinic. The clinic had to be closed immediately, requiring an extensive $180,000 professional environmental remediation and resulting in multiple bodily injury claims from immunocompromised patients.
An HVAC duct cleaning contractor treated a commercial office building over the weekend by applying an unapproved chemical encapsulant to the internal fiberglass duct liners. The building was not adequately ventilated before employees returned on Monday morning. Within hours, over thirty tenants experienced severe respiratory distress, eye irritation, and headaches due to intense VOC off-gassing. The building was evacuated, resulting in a $350,000 business interruption claim and multiple lawsuits alleging Sick Building Syndrome.
